Analysis of TIMES stories on capture & detention of Milosevic. Serbia and American aid. Coverage of the war crimes trials. Overall lack of interest of American public.

Paper Introduction:
MILOSEVIC, HUMAN RIGHTS AND THE NEW YORK TIMES For some generations now, American diplomacy has attempted to focus on human rights. Now, there is a dearth of outstanding American diplomats and a public which has other interests on their mind. For example, while much of the European press spends column after column on the Balkans, and now the genocide trials in The Hague, as far as the American press is concerned, he current problems of human rights, in Kosovo, Serbia, Croatia and now at the International Court at the Hague, are limited to a few sound bites, and some human interest stories of horror, survivors, and the desire for revenge in that region. It is therefore up to the nation’s leading newspapers, like the New York TIMES, to provide more details and consistent coverage for the few who are truly interested and involved. Paper Abstract:
Examines freedom of press vs. ethical reporting, code of ethics, role of court, examples of questionable ethics, invasion of privacy, coverage of celebrities. Outline.

Paper Introduction:
Freedom of the Press is a phrase given high value in the American system, but it is not an absolute. Freedom of the Press is found in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, and the courts give great importance to this amendment when considering competing rights. Still, there are cases where the courts find that the press goes too far, and the public often believes this is true. Unethical behavior by the press is behavior that goes against a fundamental and protected individual right and that does so by breaking one of the elements of the currently adopted Code of Ethics. Recently, the Society of Professional Journalists held a meeting in Arlington, Virginia at which those attending the convention voted on a new Ethics Code. The code contains the four principles seen as most important in ethical behavior for journalists by this group:

Compares traditional & new (online) media outlets' coverage of first three months of scandal. Magazines' organization & structure, biases, goals, articles, editorials.

Paper Introduction:
I. Introduction Although it has no constitutional function, the press has long had an important role to play in the American system of government. Often called The Fourth Estate, the press (now more often called "the media") is promoted in civics classes and in their own words as conducting a watchdog function over government. The cases of Watergate and Vietnam are often pointed to as examples of the media performing this role, and there are numerous examples of this at the state and local levels. However, this century has witnessed an evolving intimate, even symbiotic, relationship between the media and government, at least at the national level. From the Hearst newspaper chain's active promotion of the Spanish-American War through the often breathless trumpeting of the Gulf War by many

Paper Abstract:
Overview of changes in women's role in society & media & gender analysis of magazine aimed at young women in both content & advertising.

Paper Introduction:
INTRODUCTION A gender analysis of the magazine Self shows that it is directed largely at young women both in terms of content and advertising. The magazine is a monthly publication dedicated to questions of health, fitness, and lifestyle, and it is apparent that the magazine would be identified more as a women's publication than a man's based on the various issues addressed and the way these issues are treated. In addition, while the advertising often shows a certain sexual appeal that might seem to be directed at men, most of the products make this doubtful and instead suggest that the young women in the ad are intended to evoke a degree of envy on the part of magazine readers so they would buy the product in an attempt to emulate the young women and in effect become them. This is in keeping with the tone of

Paper Introduction:
PRIVACY ISSUES IN JOURNALISM IN THE 1990S ABSTRACT For most of the 20th century, certainly through the 1960s, the civil tort of invasion of privacy in various forms expanded the liability of the media under state law. Thereafter, under various constitutional decisions of the Supreme Court expanding the scope of the First Amendment guarantees of a free press, the media enjoyed considerable freedom to investigate and report and/or broadcast events as they saw fit, subject to the continued vitality of certain limitations relating to the protection of personal privacy under state tort law which continued to operate within the penumbra of federal First Amendment jurisprudence. During the 1990s, some federal and state courts tightened restrictions against particularly egregious invasions of privacy

Paper Abstract:
Life & career of early 20th Cent. Amer. reporter/war correspondent.

Paper Introduction:
This paper chronicles the career of Floyd Gibbons, one of the first modern war correspondents. A colorful character and keen observer of detail, Gibbons managed to provide compelling firsthand reports of a wide range of news events, from Pancho Villa's raids along the Mexican border to accounts of the front of the 1920 war between Poland and Russia, at which he was the only journalist present. His account of the German submarine attack that sank the British liner Laconia helped provide strong public sentiment for the United States' entry into World War II, and his heroic actions on the battlefield in France cost him an eye but earned him France's highest honor. A longtime reporter for the Chicago Tribune, his firing was as spectacular as his writing career. PRESS COVERAGE OF THE ARMS SALE TO SIERRA LEONE: COMPARING AND CONTRASTING THE GUARDIAN AND THE DAILY MAIL The recent coup d’ état and counter coup d’ état in Sierra Leone embroiled the British Foreign Office, the Foreign Secretary, and the Prime Minister in controversy. The scholar of the first age received into him the world around; brooded thereon; gave it the new arrangement of his own mind, and uttered it again. It came into him life; it went out from him truth. It came to him shortlived actions; it went out from him immortal thoughts. It came to him business; it went from him poetry. It was dead fact; now it is quick thought. It can stand and it can go. It now endures, it now flies, it now inspires. Precisely in proportion to the depth of mind from which it issued, so high does it soar, so long

Paper Introduction:
Digital communication systems are changing the future of journalism. Traditional limitations of time, space, medium, and place are rapidly disappearing. The new media made possible by digital communication systems will make it easier for people to connect with information sources. Although traditional journalism has lost much of its authority in the new Information Age, there will continue to be a need for high-quality reporting and interpretation of the news. Granted, the influence of journalists has diminished in the past few decades. Recently, Vanity Fair magazine published its annual listing of the fifty leaders of the Information Age, and only one was a journalist working for a mainstream news organization (Fulton 20). Journalists used to hold a monopoly over what types of news reached the public; with the growth of

He is a gifted writer, a masterful storyteller, and a man who has overcome an automobile accident at the age of nineteen which left him paralyzed from the waist down. He has lived a remarkable and fascinating life as a world-travelling journalist, and, most importantly, demonstrates not only a powerful determination to succeed at his profession and enjoy life, but also an inspirational sense of humor in the most harrowing of situations. He never uses his disability as an excuse, but instead paints a self-portrait which finally transcends that disability. Russell Baker's Growing Up should be awarded the Pulitzer Prize for both content and style. Baker has written a work which humanely and vividly portrays the coming-of-age of a young man at in an era crucial to the development of the United States as a modern nation---the era of the Great Depression and the Second World War. Baker's book is valuable for its entertainment value, its humor, its humanity, its poignancy, and for its masterful and seemingly effortless blending of the personal and the historical. We come to know not only this young man and his family, but also the spirit of the nation in this turbulent time. Baker is a well-respected journalist who in this book looks back over his childhood and young manhood in order to honor that childhood, his family, and the courage and steadfastness of America between the two world wars. Paper Abstract:
Examines newspaper's coverage of local, national & global issues & events in September & October.

Paper Introduction:
The New York Times from September and October of 1935 provides a strong sense of the issues of import to the people of the time, the concerns they faced both domestically and internationally, and the nature of life in New York City. We look back to this time with greater knowledge than the people of the time had about the meaning of the events they were contemplating, but it is clear from the emphasis given to stories about Mussolini and Hitler that the newspaper and its readers realized there were momentous events taking place and that these might produce a real danger for the U.S. at some point in the future. At the same time, as might be expected, life goes on, and the life of the city was especially vibrant in this era with an emphasis on diversions in sports, the arts, the theater, and film. One impression that emerges from this analysis is that

Paper Introduction:
Newspapers every day cover the same stories and do so with slightly different perspectives according to the specific views of the writers, the interests of the readers, and the traditions of the given newspaper. Even two papers in the same city may have different attitudes toward certain people, issues, or institutions, differences which can be discerned on close reading. Two stories from two different papers on the same sports team will serve to show how these differences may be manifested, referring to stories on the New York Jets in the New York Daily News and Newsday. Paper Abstract:
Compares coverage of 1955 fatal auto accident by [New York Times], [Los Angeles Times] & [Houston Post].

Paper Introduction:
Stories in the news are addressed in different ways by different newspapers, and the manner of presentation of a story may show the particular interests of the people served by the paper, the interests of the publisher, and the relative importance given to different stories by the editors. History may or may not agree with the weight given a particular story at the time of its occurrence. A case in point is the death in 1955 of actor James Dean, which was treated in a rather off-hand manner by many newspapers while within a few weeks it would be seen as a more shattering event to a certain generation, so much so that it continues to be talked about to this day. A comparison of the treatment given to the story by three newspapers--the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and the Houston Post--demonstrates how the story was seen at the time.

Paper Introduction:
Pulitzer prize winning journalist Peter Arnett has covered the erupting hot spots of the world for more than three decades. As his biographical Live From the Battlefield attests, through his frequent adversarial relationship with the powers that be and his unparalleled tenacity to get the story, Arnett has changed the face of modern journalism. Most influential in his role as war correspondent, Arnett's career has ushered in the era of independent television news coverage, as well as era of the supreme risk taker willing to fall on the sword in defence of the First Amendment. Breaking the traditional vow of silence and collusion with those who govern, he was also among the first journalists to realize that the media was an instrument of power for conveying accuracy, and for correcting the record (Arnett, 1994, p. 51).

Sociohistorical background & subtle prejudice in reviews, articles & advertising.

Paper Introduction:
The image of blacks in the American media has changed radically over the past two decades or so with the Civil Rights movement, with changes in the attitude taken toward minority groups, and with increased sensitivities on the part of those forming and projecting those images. An examination of the image of blacks in articles and advertisements from Time Magazine will show certain societal attitudes subtly represented, and these attitudes can then be linked to historical and social realities of the period. The nature of the African-American population before, during, and after World War II is described by Schaller, Scharff, and Schulzinger, who note first that before the war over three-quarters of all African-Americans lived in the South and worked mainly as tenant farmers or domestic help. Columnist's background & influence of his writing on public opinion from New Deal to Truman era. Evaluation of major social & political issues, views & methods.

Paper Introduction:
Walter Lippmann was a syndicated columnist with considerable influence. He wrote his column for over 40 years, and it appeared in leading newspapers in the United States and throughout the world, going into semiretirement in 1967, leaving a number of readers who had long depended on his column without an important part of their lives. He started his life as a journalist before the First World War and would continue writing into the Vietnam War era some 50 years later. Lippmann had a strong influence on various presidents and political leaders, and he made use of this influence to try to shape policy and influence decision-making in government. Many journalists and columnists may aspire to this sort of power, but few achieve it to the degree that Lippmann did. This paper will focus on the function of television in presidential elections through three main areas: exit polls, presidential debates, and spots. The focus is on television for three reasons. Analyzes coverage by [Time] & [New York Times] of early days of Cold War, 1945 Yalta Conference, V-E Day in Europe, Potsdam Conference, dropping of atomic bombs on Japan, Churchill's "Iron Curtain" speech, Berlin Blockade.

Paper Introduction:
Since late in 1989, when the walls of the Moscow Kremlin began to open up to democratic reform, western journalists have heralded the "end of the Cold War." With such terms as perestroika and glasnost almost as much a part of the western vocabulary as they are the Soviet, a renewed interest is blooming into the origins, legacy, and intricacies of an undeclared war of words, deeds, sanctions, and rhetoric that has lasted at least since 1945. In fact, many western journalists, for example those in Time magazine, laud Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev as the man who brought the walls of the Cold War impasse down (Nelan 26-36). With the advent of what many term to be the end of the Cold War, one is naturally concerned with its beginnings. One way to view the mounting tensions of the early period just after World War II is to examine the press coverage in the United States
